Each year Parkland College offers a variety of training sessions designed to meet the needs of operators from small and large communities. We also offer C.E.U.’s for students wanting to keep their Certification current. Those seeking to write Certification Exams at other times are encouraged to contact us.

Water

Water and CEU Credit Training Courses

Distribution System Maintenance  (.6 CEU)

This course is designed for water distribution personnel who actually do maintenance and repair of water lines. Experience is not necessary. The course consists of the following topics: distribution system components; pumps, pipes, valves, hydrants; water quality in the distribution system; flushing and cleaning; disinfection and unidirectional flushing.

Water Treatment & Distribution – Small Systems (1.8 CEU)

In this 3-day course you will learn basic mathematics, units of measurement and conversion, flow rate calculations, water sampling techniques, water testing procedures, basic groundwater treatment, distribution system hydraulics, distribution system pumps, and disinfection. The Small Systems provincial certification exam will be written at the end of this course on the 3rd day in the afternoon.

Water Treatment & Distribution – Level 1 (2.7 CEU)

This 5-day course consists of the following topics:

  • Day 1 – Basic Mathematics, The Metric System, Units of Measure and Conversions, Volume, Area, & Flow-rate Calculations, Solution Preparation and Feed Rate Calculations, & Water Sampling & Testing.
  • Day 2 – Well Construction, Water Pre-treatment (Fe/Mn Removal), Hypochlorination & Gas Chlorination
  • Day 3 – Distribution System Hydraulics, Distribution System Pumps and Components, Cross-Connection and Backflow Prevention, & Operator Safety
  • Day 4 – Surface Water Quality, Reservoir Management, Cryptosporidium Removal Strategies, Surface Water Supply, & Surface Water Treatment
  • Day 5 – Class 1 Treatment and Distribution Exam

Water Treatment & Distribution – Level 2 (1.8 CEU)

This is a 4-day class, 3-days are face to face study and day 4 is exam day.

In this class you will study:

  • Surface Water Quality
  • Surface Water Treatment and Disinfection(Hypochlorination & Chlorination)
  • Operator Safety Filter Optimization
  • THM and Corrosion Control
  • Backflow & Cross-Connection Control
  • Distribution System Hydraulics, Pumps, & Components
  • Distribution System Operation & maintenance

This class covers the following topics:

  • Introduction to Legislation & Water Quality Objectives
  • Safety – Plant & Distribution Works
  • Basic Technical Skills
  • Support Systems

Wastewater Treatment & Collection – Small Systems (1.8 CEU)

In this 3-day course you will learn basic mathematics, units of measurement and conversion, flow rate calculations, wastewater composition and treatment, lagoon operation and maintenance, sewage collection systems, pumps and pump components, sewer line problems and maintenance, backflow prevention, and operator safety. The Small systems provincial certification exam will be written at the end of this course.

Wastewater Treatment & Collection – Level 1 (2.7 CEU)

This 5-day course consists of the following topics:

  • Day 1 – Basic Mathematics, The Metric Sytem, Units of Measure and Conversions, Volume, Area, & Flow Rate Calculations, Wastewater Composition.
  • Day 2 – Wastewater Treatment, Wastewater Composition and Treatment, Stabilization Ponds (Lagoons), Lagoon Operation & Maintenance.
  • Day 3 – Sewage Collection Systems, Components, & Pumps, Sewer Line Problems, Cross-Connection and Backflow Prevention, Safety.
  • Day 4 – Preliminary Treatment, Primary Treatment, Secondary Treatment, Sludge and Solid Disposal.
  • Day 5 – Class 1 Treatment Certification Exam and Class 1 Collection Certification Exam.

Wastewater Treatment & Collection – Level 2 (1.8 CEU)

This 4-day course examines wastewater treatment / collection mathematics, wastewater, wastewater hydraulics, collection system operation & maintenance, backflow & cross – connection control, wastewater disinfection, and operator safety. The Wastewater Class 2 Provincial certification exams will be written on day 4 of this course.

Lagoon Operation & Maintenance Workshop (0.6 CEU)

This 1-day workshop is designed to aid wastewater system operators in the regular maintenance and operation of a facultative wastewater lagoon.

In this class you will study:

  • Effluent sampling regulations
  • Provincial effluent management guidelines
  • Facultative lagoon biology and chemistry
  • Lagoon operation and maintenance

Other

Centrifugal Pump Workshop (0.6 CEU)

This 1-day workshop consists of the following topics:

  • Centrifugal pump types
  • Centrifugal pump components
  • Operation and maintenance of centrifugal pumps
  • Normal and abnormal pump operating conditions
  • Centrifugal pump applications
  • Preventative maintenance
