One of the biggest roadblocks stopping many people from furthering their education is simply the cost of going to school. Tuition, books, and living expenses can add up and put a strain on any budget. But thanks to a growing scholarship program at Parkland College, some of those hurdles are being cleared in east-central Saskatchewan.
The college will be handing out over $70,000 in internal scholarships to dozens of deserving students in early March. Combined with entrance scholarships distributed this past September, Parkland College will award nearly $110,000 in financial assistance in the 2011-12 academic year.
The scholarship fund continues to expand thanks to the generous contributions of numerous corporations, local businesses, community groups, individuals, and College staff. Most of the awards are valued at $1,000 or more because the provincial government matches the donors’ gifts. The initiative is also supported by Parkland College’s annual Dollars for Scholars Golf Classic. This year’s tournament is scheduled for June 22 at Deer Park Golf Course.
Contributions from the community in the form of scholarships help Parkland College improve the education and training of area residents, and such donations impact positively on our communities and businesses. The public’s contributions really are investments in the future of the Parkland region as the college’s graduates improve their standing in life and give back to the communities in which they live.
